Walled garden with pond and sunken garden, front garden.
This walled garden (flint and brick) had been designed 15 years ago and the garden surrounds this gorgeous contemporary house. The clients, not avid gardeners, had not done much to this largish garden since it was designed and built. The shrubs and plants had completely overgrown their place, the pond had been sited under a very tall tree and the different areas of the garden were not used by this family at all. A re-design whilst integrating the existing pond and sunken area was called for.
We cleared the shrubs and plants, we re-designed the stairs from the house leading to the sunken area to make them wider and thus enlarging a very pinched area. This contemporary home marries new and old elements very well so we wanted to integrate that into the build and the planting. We re-designed the whole of the planting for the sunken area so that it was welcoming and not too tall, the bigger area created by the new steps now feel welcoming and made for entertaining.
The pond area was cleared, new planting was designed and the water feature repaired. The shrubs and bamboos at the back were taken out and new shrubs will be planted in Spring 2011. A tree walk was designed with 3 Amelanchiers mirroring the 3 fruit tree, at the end of the tree walk a semi circular standing will welcome, in time, a sculpture. The front garden construction was retained bu the planting was completely re-thought to allow for privacy from the road and to allow the client's to enjoy the later afternoon sun with a drink.
Some of the planting has already been carried out: winter, spring and summer bulbs, some 1700 of them (!) were planted by our landscapers in October and we planted the Amelanchiers, as well the as the Kousa chinensis.
The remainder of the planting will take place in the spring of 2011.
