Hampshire Food Festival winner has designs on growing own fruit and veg!

Mrs Kay Bowen of Southampton is the lucky winner in a free prize draw launched during this summers’ Hampshire Food Festival of a bespoke fruit and vegetable garden design worth £1500!

The prize draw, a popular feature during this year’s Hampshire Food Festival, was offered by Hampshire based company Françoise Murat Garden & Landscape Design, to encourage more people to consider growing their own food for the kitchen.
Françoise Murat explained what plans Kay, who is married with two children, would like for her garden:

Kay

“Kay and her family are keen to have an ornamental vegetable and fruit garden, designed with recyclable materials in mind as well as a sustainable gardening outlook. They are keen on water butts, compost heaps and using all kinds of green gardening methods. We are going to design some raised beds for vegetables such as courgettes, tomatoes, corn, peas and a wide choice of salads. We will include a herb wheel, some flowers to attract wildlife and pollinating insects and also have some pear, apple and greengage trees along with sweet and sour cherries".

"Kay is very keen on using reclaimed bits and pieces to construct arches where squashes and other vegetables can climb up to, old bike wheels as support for plants and untreated sleepers for her raised beds”.

Kay’s garden is a medium sized urban garden in Southampton. Her prize includes two design concepts to choose from, a final master plan with all detailed construction, a planting plan and a maintenance plan for Kay to know exactly what to do when throughout the year, plus £20 worth of seeds to get her started. Sophie Boxall of Hampshire Fare, organisers of The Hampshire Food Festival summed up: “Hampshire Food Festival is a celebration of local food and drink, and what could be more local than growing your own food!”
