Herbs for health and Beauty

Nicola Dickinson, a natural and organic beautician has put together some hints and tips for us on using herbs.

Nicola uses herbs in her salon and advocates a more natural approach to health and beauty.

See below for easy to use recipes with herbs that can easily be found or that you can grow yourself.

ROSEMARY
 

  • This is an excellent herb for giving a healthy shine to dark hair, using a Rosemary tea for a hair rinse.
  • Chewing a fresh sprig is brilliant for freshening the breath and helps with sore throats if a Rosemary tea is gargled...Rosemary is also known to help with mental stimulation, improving memory and helping you to become alert.
  • It’s amazing for helping keep healthy skin. Place some fresh or dried Rosemary in a muslin bag and hang under running bath water.

LAVENDER

  • This is a good all round herb to have around. Rub fresh sprigs or flowers over clothing or curtains of open windows to discourage flies. 
  • It’s a nice way to help you unwind and relax in placed inside a pillow, relaxing muscles and encouraging a restful sleep.
  • It’s also a good tea to aid digestion.
  • The flowers can also be crushed and mixed with cornstarch and small
  • amount of Lavender oil for a beautiful dusting powder after bathing or
  • even as a shoe deodoriser.

SAGE

  • Can be used in honey to help sooth a sore throat. It’s also useful as a gargle to help with tonsillitis, mouth ulcers and tender gums.
  •  The tea must be drunk sparingly as the high antiseptic properties can be a little toxic. Due avoid during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
  • It can be drunk as a tea to help through hot flushes and other symptoms of the menopause.

FEVERFEW

 
  • They do have a bitter taste, but 2-3 leaves eaten will help with certain migraines. But no more than once per day.
  • Also can use dried leaves in a muslin bag as a good moth repellent. You can also make a doctrine and use as a disinfectant around the home.

CHAMOMILE

  • We all know how chamomile tea is so relaxing and helps us to de-stress, let the tea cool to use as a hair rinse for fair hair to add shine. 
  • The tea can also help to increase appetite, sooth indigestion and colic. Chamomile is excellent for children as a tea, 1 hour before bed will help them sleep, also aids teething issues.
  • It’s excellent with most skin ailments, a muslin bag with chamomile fresh or dried and oats will help alleviate eczema and psoriasis symptoms.
